Buena Park police arrested a man believed to be under the influence of marijuana when he hit a pedestrian while driving on Saturday, June 23, police said.

Officers found the 51-year-old victim unresponsive where he’d been hit while crossing the street with his family at Western Avenue and Jackson Way, said Buena Park police Sgt. Mike Lovchik.

Investigators said the man was crossing with his family in a marked crosswalk, shortly before 10:30 p.m., when hit by the suspect’s vehicle traveling southbound on Western.

None of the other family members was injured.

The driver, Jason Rarey, 32, of Anaheim, stayed at the scene.

“Further investigation revealed that the driver was possibly under the influence of cannabis, and he was arrested without incident,” Lovchik said.

Rarey faces a murder charge because of a previous DUI conviction. He was being held in lieu of $1 million bail, according to jail records.

Anyone with information was asked to call police investigators at 714-562-3941.
